I'm Dan Thorpe.

Although my YouTube channel has over 1 million views and I have 400+ five-star reviews across the world on Amazon...

I am not a household name.

Despite this though, I get 20-30 emails/reviews per day from students who say things like:

"I needed this 60 years ago. Following Dan's teaching has become a daily pleasure. Anyone young or 80 like me can use this book with confidence." - Ian Laing

Even Drue James as well as Assaf Levavy from LickNRiff.com (with over 20 million YouTube views between them)...

Have been personally interviewed by me on my blog.

Over the years, I have taught 120+ real-life students how to fingerpick.

Now I want to share these secrets with you too.

Keep reading to find out how these rarely taught methods can help you too

STOP! Before reading further,
you need to know this:

I must warn you, Fingerstyle 101 is NOT a magic bullet or "hack"

The book takes work AND practice.

If you're expecting to play like Paul Simon overnight or in a few weeks, it is not going to happen.

Most of my students only want to play for themselves, some occasionally want to play an open mic...

...BUT all are willing to put the time and effort in.

This book is for grownups and those who are willing to practise.

Saying that, if you want a simple 20-minute per day routine...

Let me tell you about what the book can do for your playing...

Learn 10 beautiful fingerpicking patterns that will help you on the path to being able to play 1000s of classic songs.

Have you struggled in the past?

If so, this confidence-building book may be the fresh start you need. Here's just some of what is inside...

  • Discover how to play the "Inside-out" and "London" Travis picking patterns (pages 62 & 73) as used in 100s of classic songs.
  • Find the three exact cures that fixed my students' slow chord changes once and for all (page 28).
  • A surprisingly simple thing the pros do to avoid plucking wrong strings even when NOT looking (page 12).
  • How to fix the "7 deadly fingerpicking mistakes" which make 90% of beginners want to tear their hair out! (page 36).
  • The trick the ancient Greeks used that can help you remember more, no matter how bad your memory is (page 106).
  • The "Going-Up" pattern used in many songs such as "Hallelujah", "Unchained Melody", and "Everybody Hurts" (page 42).
  • Reduce your brain age by up to 10 years using a scientifically proven creativity exercise discovered in a BBC documentary (page 107).
  • Learn the "Ultra-Flexible" pattern used in "Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton and "Always on My Mind" by Elvis Presley (page 58).
  • Why using a pick can improve your fingerpicking tone (page 14), how your phone can help you improve faster (page 107), the exact steps on how to simplify each pattern (page 46), and more...

All 80+ examples are taught in TAB along with standard notation.

You also learn how to read TAB properly, and get an ink-saving TAB PDF file...

Handy if you want an extra copy of all the musical examples printed out (e.g. to make notes on).

Better than that, the audio tracks are downloadable at normal and slower speeds so you can learn the examples in a steady, confidence-building way.

Talking of confidence...

If you think you are not good enough to get results, think again as:

71-year-old Pam would "sit and cry" because guitar playing was so hard, but watch her now. If she can do it, so can you!

If you have doubts about your ability, watch and be inspired by the video below. Watch Pam (and other students) play pieces from the book. See what you can be doing on your guitar too.

If you ever feel like you have no natural talent, realise this...

Pam and the others did NOT feel confident at first either, but to be frank...

If they can do it... There is no reason why you can’t too.

She even told me to tell this heart-warming story...

Read this to see how far Pam has developed.

Pam Testimonial

Pam told me like many others do, she was taught poorly previously. This brings me on to a good point and an important question I want to ask you...

When was the last time your favourite YouTube teacher taught you a lesson on playing with good technique?

Most guitar "teachers" in real life and on YouTube just teach songs...

NOT how to play them with proper technique.

This leads to poor technique, crippling finger pain, and...

An increase in the chances of rheumatoid arthritis.

Ever get sore fingers like this? (see this image). If so, you have been taught all wrong.

Finger

You do NOT need calluses on your fingers  - instead, you should use a light touch. What I call "Minimum Pressure Required".

Habits like pressing too firmly can be HARD to break, but the good news is...

To fix them, all you have to do is follow this simple system which includes:

How to combine chords and melody to make it sound like multiple guitars - just like guitarists such as Ralph McTell and Paul Simon do

Anyone can learn to fingerpick and play guitar; it just takes belief and the right knowledge.

  • Discover how to quickly adapt all 10 patterns to ANY other chords - giving you endless "getting lost in the moment" fun (page 98).
  • Why you should think like a drummer if you want better rhythm AND the only four rhythms you need to know (page 33).
  • The surprising answer to the "should I fingerpick with my nails or skin?" debate - with an answer that goes back 100s of years (page 21).
  • The pinkie! Why you should avoid it sticking out like you are drinking tea with the queen of England (page 14).
  • How silly phrases such as "Gary Eats Chili Dogs" can help you STOP forgetting the things you learn (page 106).
  • The two chords taken from a 19th-century ballroom waltz that will add romance and love to your playing almost instantly (page 92).

Plus, 7 steps to sitting with the guitar properly. These will reduce strain, pain, and even give you a better tone (page 9).

Yet, most guitarists are lucky if they are taught any of these things (e.g. how to angle the guitar so troublesome chords like C Major are easier to play).

Plus, discover all of this...

  • The two things inspired by the wizardry of Harry Potter, which you must do daily to make improvements (page 22).
  • What guitarists like Eric Clapton and James Taylor, who are playing their 5000th or more, pro gig do to ensure they keep improving (page 104).
  • The fun and silly "Pet Test" where you can even use your dog or cats' reaction to gauge your progress! (page 109).
  • The pro technique called the "Cup" which will help stop you from plucking the wrong strings once and for all (page 12).
  • How to avoid accidentally muting strings in chords such as C Major and D Major when fingerpicking (page 25).
  • Plus... How to use a capo if your chords buzz (page 29), fingerpick triplets with the "Romanza" pattern (page 68), 3 steps to training each hand completely (page 8), and more...

Specifically created for those who are 40+...

Did you know learning later on in life can be to your advantage?

Many older students suffer from sore joints.

Yet, in the book, I show you how using a simple "leg support"...

Can help you immediately reduce the strain on your knees and back. Yep, simple changes like this can yield quick improvements.

There are dozens of examples like this BUT did you know...

Learning later on in life does NOT have to be hard?

In fact, you can use it to your advantage.

Why?

Your passion.

Kids often learn quickly but give up quickly.

Adults often start slowly, but once they get past the "tipping point", in my teaching experience...

They rarely give up.

Once an adult reaches the "tipping point", progress builds quickly, and the snowball effect starts to take over.

This book will help you reach this point where you never ever want to stop playing.

"I started learning at age 8 and it was easy, but I got bored and gave up a few years later.

Now, I am 67, it is much harder for sure, but I am so much more passionate and thanks to Dan's teaching even my 13-year-old grandson who is grade 4 on guitar was impressed with how far I have come".

Here are the first bits of feedback from the readers of the 2nd edition

This book represents a gold mine of fingerstyle technique and advice for guitarists of all levels.

GORDON LYNCH

Harrogate, UK

Dan has done it again! This new second edition of Fingerstyle 101 is exactly what I, an old fart, need to boost my fingerstyle technique and motivation to practice.

JIM MARSHALL

Pasadena, CA

Over the years, I have seen and attempted to follow several fingerpicking guides, but this is succinct and very accessible. The text is 'personable' - Dan really does want his readers to achieve.

REVEREND MICHAEL BOSTOCK

Newtownards, NI

I have used several of Dan’s books. The second edition of Fingerstyle 101 is his best yet. The first edition was widely praised and became an Amazon bestseller, but the second edition is even better. It is ridiculously good value".

About the Author

Dan Thorpe

Dan Thorpe is from Birmingham in the UK (not Alabama).

He admits to struggling on guitar in his early days, but he's not shy about talking about these struggles.

Since then though, he has played many gigs, jammed with dozens of musicians, and is an RGT qualified member (Registry of Guitar Tutors).

Fun fact: Dan is an A-grade Psychology student (at college level) and has used this knowledge to develop methods to help guitarists learn faster.

These include the "Five times Rule", playing in your "Mind's eye", and "The 4 golden rules of learning guitar".

All of these are backed by research, and all are taught in the book. Each will help you cherish every moment with this wonderful instrument so you can play with a smile on your face.

Amazon Reviews

Warning: It is not for this type of guitarist though...

Although it has 200+ 5-star reviews, in the interest of being completely transparent, here is the most critical review the book has had to date.

No doubt the writer of the review has played for decades (judging by his other reviews) and can play lots of songs.

Experienced and highly competent guitarists is NOT who this book is for.

I like the Mark Hanson book he mentioned and have my own copy, but that is for experienced guitarists who can already play to a high standard. If the writer of the review had Fingerstyle 101 forty years ago, he might have saved a lot of time and frustration with his playing back then when he needed it, and made even better progress.

Still, if YOU want to save time, improve your technique and have more fun, try Fingerstyle 101 today.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve bought lots of books and courses, but never seem to finish them, how is this different?

I don’t believe there is a book out there anywhere like this. I have written this book the way I teach students, in a step by step way, with fun music, encouragement, and specific advice. It is organized, conversational, and fun. One student even said in an Amazon review:

“Dan talks to you like you are there, it’s like having a one-to-one lesson with Dan" - Steve

Hi Dan, I had the original Fingerstyle 101 and liked it a lot - what's new in this version?

Lots more in the new version. More than triple the amount of examples, more patterns, now with slowed-down audio tracks as well as normal speed, sections on technique, and more. All in all, this is a bigger, more complete book than the first edition was.

How safe is your site when putting my card details in?

It is 100% secure. We use https, the latest high tech website protection, and have daily website scans to make sure we are 100% secure.

I'm 72, the book sounds great, but I’ve only played for 8 months and still struggle with chords. Will I still find it useful?

The first example for each fingerpicking pattern is played on an E minor chord. Every beginner can play these examples with a few minutes of practice. Throughout the book, you will also get lots of tips on improving hard chords for beginners (such as C Major).

I’ve played since I was 48, (56 now), consider myself an intermediate player, do you think I’ll get much from the book?

I’ve not seen you play, but most guitarists can enjoy this book. The materials are great fun to keep going back to, the technical tips will fix a lot of guitarists issues and the patterns are fun to play. I’ve never taught anyone who knew all the material in the book.

How long will it take to see results?

Great question. Practice for 20 minutes a day, 5 times a week and you will see results. Some results will be within a few days, but of course, guitar playing is long-term so expect real results over the next few months. I'm not a miracle worker though, so remember, you will need to put some time and effort in.

All this can be yours, right now, for as little as $9!
